I'm a chemist and a lot of my job is programming.
Luckily programming is not my only concern and definitely not the objective.

I have seen some programmers in the field, but generally it's just experts of the field that learn how to develop software and do what they need
Thus there wouldn't be so much space for a programmer.
Now, scientific equipment is another story, surely they need a few programmers.
