Will #ScienceTwitter🐦 -> #ScienceMastodon🐘 work?

The response to this was massive & my #Mastodon has gone from a quiet void to a science party in just 3 days!

Many are worried about servers, network effects & losing followers

Follow these tricks to make it work for you! 🧵

1. Find your friends on #Mastodon 👯👯

If you want your followers to find you, put your #Mastodon handle in your Twitter bio, otherwise this doesn't work!

Go to fedifinder.glitch.me & insert your handles

It will create a csv of #Mastodon handles of who you follow on Twitter

Then go to #Mastodon > Preferences > Import&Export > Import

Select Merge, not Overwrite ‼️

Then upload, and you're done!

Clearly, we'll need to do this several times in the coming weeks as people trickle into #Mastdon. Again, put your #Mastodon handle in the Twitter bio!

2. Sync your Twitter & #Mastodon account 🔁

Many won't want to give up Twitter yet (or ever), but doing 2 platforms is challenging

There's a simple tool to cross-post: moa.party 🎉

Everything you post on #Mastodon will show on Twitter & vice-versa 🤩

3. Choosing servers 🖥️

The server you choose doesn't matter - it's all connected. So I don't agree with arguments that this will limit discussion to an "in-group" - there's no difference to Twitter

@DavidBrueckner No, choosing a server is quite important to start.
Not in the way it's advertised though; you should not spend several days just finding the perfect instance, that is useless since you're due to change instance quickly.
There is quite a big difference between Mastodon and Twitter which is the local timeline and the system through which toots propagate in the fediverse.

I am going to write a guide on how to socialize on Mastodon and choosing an appropriate starting instance, without wasting too much time, is quite important.
I believe that a good place to start shouldn't have a very high insularity in order to allow you to discover other instances, on the other hand it shouldn't be a place which is hyperconnected (such as qoto) because that will make you feel that the local timeline and in general the local community is useless; which it isn't in a lot of smaller instances.
