But in the case of instances like Gab that welcome unmoderated hate speech as part of their core mission, not sure what other options there would be to try first for instances where that content is against their content policies....

Sounds to me that you don't like free speech. Which is fine. But I don't think it's fair to pressure others to crack down on free speech by accusing them of giving racists a voice. The racists already have a voice, free speech platforms on the Fediverse exist. The question is, are people willing to confront their speech, or merely place their fingers in their ears, ignoring the racists and pretending they don't exist.

@realcaseyrollins @masterofthetiger Gabbers have every right to speak as they choose inside Gab. Just that no one else on the Fediverse is obliged to amplify and federate out what they do there.

And others in the Fediverse can confront the racists speech inside Gab fine, easily and freely, without amplifying or federating it.

1/ Exactly! Which is what they should do! I think because of Gab's design, it could become a hub for all perspectives and demographics, if only more non-neo Nazis would join. For instance I'm one out of only six or so black Gabbers that I know of. That's not Gab's fault, there's no rule against black people gabbing. It's just because black people don't join. There are even fewer liberals.

2/ At the same time, I don't like how a lot of Mastodon admins are pressured into banning Gab or banning users for supporting Gab's mission. It's their right to do so, sure, I just don't like bullying tactics. Besides they're not banning Gab because they genuinely don't like it, but because the mob forced them to.
