Musing about the guy who bought the other site

One of the biggest mysteries in US business is why Elon Musk was so successful with SpaceX and Tesla, when he’s obviously such a terrible manager. I know people have lots of dismissive theories (government subsidies, blah) but I don’t think those really pan out.

@matthew_d_green Another odd contrast is between SpaceX and Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos's space venture, started *before* SpaceX, also staffed with top-shelf engineers. But SpaceX is now the reliable, innovative (1st-stage recovery!), low-cost provider -- and Blue has yet to put anything at all in orbit.

Someone did something right there. Maybe COO Gwynne Shotwell -- but Elon gets into tech weeds, and if Gwynne ever does, they keep it awfully quiet..

I was just surprised to learn that SpaceX has only ~2x the employee count of Blue Origin (according to wikipedia).

I expected to see employee count of BO to be similar to employee count of SpaceX at the time of first successful Falcon 1 launch. I can't easily find the latter value, but now I think it's unlikely.
