Welcome newly arrived refugees from that other social media site!

You'll likely get a lot of (mostly unsolicited) advice about how the "culture" here is "different". It can be overwhelming and make you feel like you have to walk on eggshells. But other than "don't be a jerk" (which you hopefully knew already), you can safely ignore most of it..

Follow people, make friends, connect with old ones, speak your mind. You got this.

@mattblaze I would unsolicitedly (sorry :) add to this, be aware of the rules of the server you have signed up to. Some have whimsical or restrictive rules about what you can post.

@mart_brooks Sure, but you really think people don't understand that?

Relentlessly tone policing newbies, which seems to be some kind of hazing ritual here, is incredibly off-putting. If we keep doing that, this place will shrivel up and die.

@mattblaze I think people rarely bother to read terms and conditions and there are a huge variety of rule sets across instances. For example, someone I follow has signed up to an instance which has an "english only" rule and he likes practicing his non-english languages.

Almost no one reads the terms and conditions of any website. I have seen the analytics data from hundreds of clients. I have even set alerts to tell me when someone visits the page so I can congratulate them @mart_brooks @mattblaze

@jonahstein @mart_brooks @mattblaze Once upon a time, the law did not approve of ‘adhesion contracts.’

IIUC you mean contracts that are take-it-or-leave-it and not subject to negotiation. They are restricted in using some clauses, but how can you have a shop that doesn't haggle without them?
