You know, for all I keep hearing from some people about IRC being so much better for moderation than Matrix, I can't remember the last time I received unsolicited /query spam on Matrix from bots spreading antisemitic slurs. Meanwhile, in the last few weeks it's been most of the notifications coming from my IRC client.

@delroth

I receive ~no invite spam on Matrix (not only no message spam, because that's impossible). I'm curious why the amount of invite spam on Matrix is smaller than the amount of /msg spam on IRC.

@robryk I suspect a combination of "higher barrier to entry" and "less return on investment" (due to invite spam being more limited than message spam)

@delroth Mhm, that makes sense, but it's really weird that it's such a large difference (never over years vs. multiple times within a week).

When you say more limited, do you mean that the target doesn't see the message before they agree to the invite or something else?

@robryk correct, that's what I meant (and I suspect most people don't just accept completely random invites - or just the first one of a wave - but not sure :) ).
