I was wondering when — and if — anyone will criticize #Israel flooding of the #Hamas tunnels network in #Gaza from the very moment it was mentioned. The prize goes to Dmitry Polansky, deputy ambassador to UN from #Russia who is Hamas ally. He said that flooding of the tunnels constitutes no more and no less than a "war crime".

He didn't go into details and I wasn't able to find any UN war crimes definition that would come even close here, especially since Hamas clearly explained access to the tunnels is reserved exclusively to military personnel, when asked about their possible use as bomb shelters by civilians.

@kravietz

Do you know whether this involves a large enough amount of seawater to change salinity of soil enough to matter for plants? (I don't really have a sense of orders of magnitude here -- in particular how permeable everything around the tunnels is.)

@robryk

The tunnels are quoted to be at 40 m depth and below, that's much deeper than any farm crops roots would reach.
