I know about (at least some) problems caused by tilling, but I don't really know what's a better approach than crop rotation (other than pausing between plantings). A skim of wiki didn't help, so can you recommend something to read about it?
@robryk@qoto.org Also I don't believe Shady Sands has access to pesticides so yk that vulnerable ass farm is done for the minute any aphids show up
@robryk@qoto.org Nitrogen fixing plants without deep root systems help push along the nutrients while keeping the soil down and letting nutrients build up for the deeper rooted plants. Shady Sands even has brahmin shit out fertilizer. You can put down some nitrogen fixing grasses and let the brahmin graze over the the land, aerating and fertilizing the soil.
alternatively a food forest would be pretty cool
If plants sucked out nutrients faster than the soil could refuel then forests could never have survived. no animal would ever have enough to eat.
we shot ourselves in the foot by making farming a near automatic task for tractors. There's no reason for a dedicated farming society to optimize for manual labour instead of food output and sustainability.
