There was a grocery store next to my high school that sold something they advertised as "pre-war butter".

@robryk How long ago? "Bog butter" is still found in Ireland and Scotland, the presumption being it was buried either to preserve it (peat bogs are good for that), and/or add to the flavour. Oldest finds are about 1,800 years old.

I'm pretty sure they were simply using the meme that pre-ww2 stuff was better.

Doesn't butter go rancid in oxygen-free environments too (albeit much more slowly)?

I think you didn't get the middle one until I sent the top one (or at least the middle one was invisible on your instance's public UI until ~that time -- I checked because this is something that started randomly happening recently; my instance's admins are going to try figuring out what's going on).
