Oh of course meta is about to "cull low performers" via stack ranking, beliefs about individualistic drivers of performance are always deeply intertwined with these beliefs about masculinity-contest cultures. All the research I've been reading for the past three years plays out on big stages in tech. Incredible.

By individualistic drivers of performance you mean the assumption that performance of a team is a function of the sum of "performances" of members? (I would guess something like this, but my very literal reading leaves me confused whether this has something to do with some kinds of intrinsic motivation.)

@robryk I think the best place I have unpacked this idea is here: osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/tfjyw

But essentially the entire idea of 1) grading on a curve instead of absolute grades has been disputed for years in assessment (bc what if everyone succeeds) e.g. nytimes.com/2016/09/11/opinion and 2) beliefs that lone geniuses are what truly drive outcomes are strongly associated with discriminatorily assessing performance scientificamerican.com/article
