Has this opposition unity thingy ever worked?

I remember, while growing up, there was the third front in 2009. The results were very poor.

Even this time too I think it will fail massively. @mastodonindians

@shibaprasad There were two third front governments in the 90s. The INC offering only outside support probably terminally hamstrung them. Maybe if the INC joins in, things may be different.

@shibaprasad @mastodonindians Well I feel like they are making some really bad decisions. Naming their coalition 'INDIA' clearly looks like propaganda to lure in voters, but I guess they are forgetting that majority of voters are not going to be swayed by that.

Maybe if they had a good plan and NDA had made bad decisions in their term (which they haven't imo) it would be a different story but I doubt that's the case.

@shibaprasad
IMO The opposition coalition doesn't seems promising as of now, and if it doesn't works, it could very well backfire! Making the ruling party even bigger.

Also, the biggest risk isn't losing, but inside quarrel and exploding.

Yep - it has never worked. AAP emerged after fighting the congress and now they are joining hands with the congress against BJP. BJP already won when the the opposition unity thingy started.

@nita @gokuldas @shibaprasad @mastodonindians

Maybe it will work if the alliance is strategic - they need to contest seats in a targeted way. That way they don't split the vote. We'll see but I know there can in infighting in certain places when alliances are attempted to be formed. There was an opposition coalition in 1998, I think. They collapsed after a year of furious legislating to try pass as much as possible.

@seanbala @gokuldas @shibaprasad @mastodonindians

I think there has to be an alliance anchor - one big party which moors all the parties. I dont see any, so I am skeptical. Contesting seats in a targetted way only works in theory. In practice, no one can predict which party will win which seat. So every party will predict that they will win every seat they contest in and then negotiate with other parties on whose candidate stays and who goes. These negotiations always break down, unless there is an independent big party taking the decisions.

@nita @gokuldas @mastodonindians Absolutely.

I.N.D.I.A basically has gifted BJP the 2024 election, already. Just imagine CPIM Congress fighting against eachother in Kerala, AAP Congress in Punjab, Delhi. CPIM TMC in West Bengal. Then they're sharing the stage and boasting about fighting BJP and fascism and what not.

How idiotic.
