@petergleick The Chinese are far smarter than Trump. The Chinese aren't doing blanket tariffs, but targeted tariffs. They're targeting the areas of the USA that support Trump.
For example, my forlorn lackluster state of West Virginia is known for coal exports and extreme Trump support. We export coal to China, which Trump probably doesn't even know. So, the Chinese just popped a tariff on US coal imports.
Bahahahaha.

@shuttersparks @petergleick The tariffs on ag equipment are interesting, too. Deere is hq'd in Illinois, but China may be interested in pushing internal development in that sector, with some parallel development from e.g. industrial espionage. I'm certainly not going to cry over targeting Deere, their sales model sucks.
