ok, asked 兄ちゃん about this lotr-show, and it's actually made me sad...

guy spent like 50 years writing, revising, and rewriting this world to get every detail to mesh, and thing just tosses that all out and makes mostly-unrelated story that uses his name for sake of money

he wanted to make a mythology for england, and now only anyone will remember is lazy cash-grab for us people
@shmibs
>uses his name for sake of money
no it doesn't. its called "lord of the rings" not "jrr tolkiens exact words"
>only anyone will remember is lazy cash-grab
only if yall keep screaming about it. nobody remembers the robocop remake, the watchmen movie, or independence day 2. if they suck -> they are forgotten.
people barely remember peter jackson's hobbit trilogy anymore, but do remember jackson's original trilogy. movies which some extreme nerds hate for tweaking to fit as a film. nobody is ever happy about anything, yall weren't gonna like it anyways
@why
how many people do you know have actually read silmarillion?

tolkien's work has never been presented in a "public-friendly" format before. this is it. and when this fails for being garbage it will disappear into the west. or else when it doesn't fail it will overwrite everyone's perception. either way everything he hoped for is forgotten
@shmibs @why I would prefer to take each work as its own and not let it affect my enjoyment of the entire canon it relates to, but I have to admit that the Star Wars prequel and Disney Star Wars have ultimately affected my perception of the Star Wars franchise as a whole. I don't think it has lessened my appreciation of the original trilogy and some parts of the (pre-Disney) extended universe. Maybe it's a more mature way of seeing it, but the childlike wonder of "think of all the awesome stories that could be happening in that setting!" has gone and been replaced by a feeling of "perhaps we should be thankful for the good stories we've had and leave this setting alone to die with some dignity". Same with Star Trek.
@guizzy @shmibs but fans wont let things die with dignity, they deserve it to be milked. its up to rights holders to let things die: without robert zemeckis actively blocking all back to the future stuff, we would have 3 separate reboots by now.
@why @guizzy @shmibs there are studio people literally waiting for zemeckis to die btw, they have multiple sequel scripts lined up
@Moon @guizzy @shmibs and itll sell billions because idiotic fans deserve to have their favorite things raped
@why @guizzy @shmibs movies are a business, you can either do it as a fair exchange of "I want to monetize your creative work, the better it is the more money we will make" or "let's minmax profitability at the expense of every other factor, here is my idea for beverly hills chihuahua 3"
@Moon @guizzy @why
the other option is "destroy copyright and let people who actually care about things make adaptations of them
@shmibs @Moon @why Ultimately that might be the best way to seal up a canon and protect it. Despite countless derivative works, I sleep well at night knowing that nothing Sherlock Holmes outside of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories are canon.
@guizzy @Moon @why @shmibs One of the things I don't like is when they attempt to claim to be the canon when their work has nothing to do with the original author of the series. Like, get out of here with that.
@sim @Moon @guizzy @shmibs the writers of the bible is an autistic can of worms im not comfortable opening

@sim @guizzy @Moon @why @shmibs old testament is based if you can et through the bits where they list with how many lambs have to be slaughtered and in which way for what crimes.

and then repeat it like three times with minor variations

@skells @sim @guizzy @Moon @why
the best part of old testament is where it says love between david and jonathan was deeper and more profound than any love between a man and woman ever could be
