Marty's Ƀent Issue #937: Application > Theory

"Here is possibly my favorite quote from Satoshi, which highlights the fact that he was a pragmatic builder instead as opposed to a theorizing academic: 'I actually did Bitcoin kind of backwards. I had to write all the code before I could convince myself that I could solve every problem, then I wrote the paper.'”

"pragmatic building > ideal theory"

The first thing you learn if you run a fedi server is that the price of civilization is a perpetual stream of Visigoths at the gates.

That's not a complaint, just an observation. Anything you do, someone will want to shit on. Literally anything: you can jerk off in the shower—something that affects no one—and you can find some group of people that will object to this, and a subset of those people would try to ruin the activity for you if they could.

But if you make something (or even run some code someone else made), especially if it's as visible as a Pleroma server or something like that, there'll be a parade of people trying to shit on it, trying to waste your time and energy. More people would be running these sites if there weren't: friends of mine that were running Pleroma servers have bailed specifically because of these people. DKE, for one, would still be up. It's not trolls, you know, I'm not talking about mischief and lulz, but people that are just doing the petty destruction without a point.

I'm pleased to get the normies off Twitter, I'd like to eliminate Twitter entirely, along with the rest of the San Francisco Data Cartel. But I can understand the people that don't want the influx of normies, because they come with a segment of people that just wanna trash the place.

You ever read A Clockwork Orange? The movie nails the part about free will (and the idea that without free will, good and evil are meaningless), but it leaves off one of the other big themes of the book (maybe due to time constraints, maybe because it wouldn't translate well into film): spite and petty destruction are normal juvenile impulses, but they're boring and empty, and you grow out of kicking over sandcastles because creation is more fulfilling.

Count Dracula was 412 when he moved to England in search of new blood.

Sauron was 54,000 years old when he forged The One Ring.

Cthulhu had seen galaxies flare into life and fade to darkness before he put madness in the minds of men.

Tories accused of corruption and NHS privatisation by former chief scientist - theguardian.com/politics/2021/ "King contrasted the success of the vaccination programme, carried out by the NHS, with the failure of the government’s test-and-trace operation"

Laptop decided to brick itself...

I've seen lots of enthusiasm for Thinkpads so likely gonna grab one, any recommendations or good resources forums for first time buyers? There's a lot of information out there, not all of it trustworthy.

Don't need to game on it, just something for work and general coding.

Any suggestions you guys have would be super sweet.

so, what are the unwritten rules of this place?

i.e. I see very little discussion of trading specifics or links to YouTube videos - I can see why you guys might not be into that. maybe I'm just in a corner of the fediverse that doesn't do stuff like that.
