I'm designing an experiment and am searching for easily-explainable distinctions that most people don't know.
For example, the differences between:
- a hardtail and full-suspension mountain bike
- an engine and a motor
- jail and prison
- a lawyer and attorney
- others?

– tree and shrub (hard)
– fluid and liquid (easy)
@Ethan_Landes @Ruth_Mottram A pretty fluid distinction.
@szescstopni @Ruth_Mottram @Ethan_Landes tree vs plant is a can of worms
@MatroidGirl @Ruth_Mottram @Ethan_Landes Worms themselves are a can of worms.
@szescstopni @MatroidGirl @Ethan_Landes hah yes. I had thought about worms. But they are *truly* a nightmare.. Many species are. A colleague who studies glacier algae once told me that snow algae that live on top of snow on glaciers is as far removed from glacier algae (that lives on bare ice on glaciers, so maybe only a metre or two away at most in winter) as humans are from trees ...
@szescstopni @Ruth_Mottram
My first thought was that there was no way that tree vs shrub is a meaningful distinction. One search later...
