I would be interested in learning Emacs too to see what a live lisp programming environment is like compared to #Smalltalk, so that might be the deciding factor.

@CodingItWrong as a long-time Lisp fan (and a long-time Emacs user), I feel is more worth the force-multiplier and meta-programming buzz than Lisp. If you have the mental bandwidth, do try out Prologs like SWI or Ciao (or ).

If you are dead set on Lisp, you could try it on a very capable platform using - Lisp Flavoured Erlang.
