#DwarfFortress 's climbing mechanics would be a lot more useful if I had any idea how to look up. I spawned in elf forest retreats twice having no idea where to climb to find the other elfs. 
Apparently the "<>" buttons moves the view on the z axis? I though that was just for climbing... did I misread the in-game help...
edit: oh, it doesn't work in adventure mode. well golly gee.
edit: oh. you have to be in look mode.
