Honestly, my conclusion is that the popular view of Sam in tech circles (the ones we are sadly forced to rely on for information in this case) is very much like Elon was a few years ago: just outright identity defining idolatry is very common, to the point that mounting a defence is the only thing that matters, coherence is entirely optional.

I don't get the deification of Altman either. He had a startup that did as well as the S&P 500; if you do as well as an index, why invest in a startup? Then he is head of YCombinator, and everybody thinks he is a genius.
He seemed to be part of the crowd that thought startups are great and are the answer to all the world's problems. Now that he is going to MS, I think we can tell the "startups are the answer to everything" crowd to shut up.
