ICJ orders Israel must:
- Take all necessary measures to avoid commission of acts as listed under Article 2
- Ensure military forces don't commit those acts
- Prosecute incitement of genocide
- Allow basic services
- Protect evidence
They say these findings create legally binding requirements. The votes were not close. 15-2, 16-1 for some findings.
Again, impossible to imagine Israel doing this. They're already in violation of dozens of UN rulings. Still a blow to their standing, imo
Judge Donoghue: ICJ will not make a decision on whether or not genocide occurred now, but rather it will make a decision on the possibility of genocide occurring.
And that is what they just did. Sounds a bit like the ents agreeing that the hobbits are not orcs. But according to what I read, this is pretty fast for this court.
People are saying this is a win for Israel bc it doesn't call for an immediate ceasefire, but unless I'm mistaken, that was not going to happen today regardless. They first had to rule that a genocide was likely taking place.
And this isn't the end. The proceedings will keep going. Israel will have more bad days in court.
It's going to take a lot more than some bad days in court to stop them, but this keeps the pressure on their gov't, and the scrutiny was getting to them before this finding
@RichPuchalsky
Well, they had to rule it was _plausible_ that a genocide is taking place because South Africa brought the case under the genocide convention.
If the court didn't find it plausible that a genocide was ongoing they probably wouldn't have ordered Israel to do anything at all.
There's another buried story here about the ICC prosecutor just completely failing to take any actions, which is why it is South Africa being the country bringing the complaint to this court.
