This is an interesting approach and I wonder if it will work out. I wish the administration had thought of it months ago.

I would not be surprised if Hamas had more trust in the U.S., or at least less distrust, than it does in Israel’s government. toad.social/@KimPerales/112593

I would not be surprised if Hamas offered that sort of unilateral deal from the start, as would be a very concrete break in the relationship if the US indeed did this.

For the same reason I don't expect this in anything serious: Biden is way past the point where support for Bibi is based on something like a neutral political calculus, his support for Bibi is in true believer territory. Doing an unilateral deal would be a stab in the back to the people he's protected for so long while asking for very little in return.

@tobychev I do think there’s political calculus involved. Most Americans from Gen X and older - maybe some elder millennials also - are very supportive of Israel. Some of them hate Netanyahu and want to see him gone, but would be unhappy if the U.S. completely abandoned Israel.

Some of them are right-wing people but a lot of them are liberals and swing voters. And crucially, they are people who always or almost always show up to vote.
