The betting markets turned out to be right. Betting market Kalshi said 28K people bet on Kamala Harris winning while 40K people bet on Trump. Kalshi will pay out $159M to bettors.
Polymarket which serves non-US citizens will pay out $287M to people who bet on Trump including the anonymous Frenchman who placed $40M on pro-Trump bets who will make $80M if Trump wins the popular vote.

When you win a bet that has close to 1:1 odds, you aren't really right, you are simply lucky.
Had Harris won you could write almost exactly the same story, the market was close to evenly split.
