somebody made a rather compelling argument when it comes to the monolithic surveillance capitalism web versus the decentralised web: the former is almost always more convenient to use than the latter. they are, on average, less trouble, and thus offer a better user experience. people are only willing to sacrifice convenience if they get something they appreciate in return, and for the most part, decentralised networks offer little over the commercial centralised offerings other than feeling good about yourself because you're using more ethical software, which isn't something people generally care about. what they care about is whether they can reach their friends or follow celebrities. the network effect.
