I'm thawing some strawberries i froze in June to use for lunch/dinner. They smell so good!! Nothing like the store bought rubbish

@piggo Got some good tips on how to freeze them best? I've always got gajillions of strawberries every summer, but freezing them ain't that easy.

@trinsec i dont think i bookmarked the recipe, but it was basically:

1. wash, halve and freeze on a tray on parchment
2. when hard, transfer to a ziplock bag

the point is that they didnt stick together and kept shape perfectly
@trinsec I also dried them in my dryer, these were excellent as well. Also you can make a jam. Too many strawberries is a nice problem to have :P

@piggo Dryer?? Won't they get tumble-smashed into paste?

@piggo Huh, interesting. Seems a bit overkill for my once-a-year use. Wonder if I could make banana chips with this too...

@trinsec I'm sure you can, you can dry almost any fruit or vegetable. I often go foraging for fruit that just grows in alleys

@piggo Where the hell are you that has fruit growing in random alleys?!

@trinsec its actually everywhere in cz when you leave the city. pear trees, apple trees, cherries, plums, stuff like that

@piggo Huh, nice. Here everything is way too cultivated to have random fruit trees growing. You want an apple tree? Well, go plant one in your garden!

@piggo There are random bramble bushes around, though. I know where to find a bunch. Just not my favorite fruit to bother with. :D

@trinsec do you have elder bushes/trees there? these make excellent soda

@piggo What is an 'elder tree'? Besides it being a tree that could be sent to a nursery home?

@piggo Uh.. Elderberries.. lessee the translation. Vlierbessen. Mmm, can't say I'm familiar with those, no.

@trinsec it grows all over Europe, maybe you can find some next spring. Flowers in May or June i think, fruits are from August or so

@piggo I'll see if I can spot one during summer, then. The only familiarity I have with elderberries is:

“Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!”

(Now, if the elderberries smell good, this might actually be a compliment!)

@trinsec you really want the flowers, the berries can be used for jam or as a dye but are not as good. You can make socata or cordial from the flowers, or fry them. or dry for tea. it's an amazing plant

@piggo I'll have to find one first. :D I'll keep it in mind though, thanks!
