Why are house numbers in the #US so long?
Why do they have 4 or 5 digits?
They can't be thousands of residencies on a single street ...

@lydiaconwell Well, at least that beats the situation we have here... imagine a <name> Street, and a <name> Plaza, bordering each other, and each have house number... 3 for example. The mail gets misdelivered so often. -.-
@trinsec I wasn't criticising, I'm genuinely asking: Why so many digits?
I'd search for it myself but: a) I'm too lazy, and: b) I'd like an authentic answer from a real American who has lived the reality of long house numbers.
