@TomDelargy
I dunno, if quote posts were so important to him he can move to a server that already supports it?
There are modified Mastodon instances supporting QTs, and there are non-Mastodon instances that already supports QT from the beginning.
@TomDelargy
What do you mean 'vanished into thin air'? That's still visible on the old instance and you can link to there. The old account won't get deleted, it'll show 'this user has moved to <new instance>'.
Don't count on vanilla Mastodon (which mastodon.social is at) ever getting proper QTs, so either you accept that, or you move. That's the only option you have.
@trinsec @neilhimself I get followed all the time by people who have apparently never posted anything or followed anyone or have any followers. And when I click the link to see their old account there's nothing there either. Maybe I'm just getting people who've been on the site for 15 months and have still to post or Boost anything. Strikes me as quite unlikely though.
With so many new people who don't know what they're doing, that doesn't strike me as odd, actually.
It's also entirely possible that your server didn't federate fully with those account(s) yet.
@trinsec @neilhimself Why should I not count on Mastodon ever getting #QuotePosts? Haven't you seen his toots about considering this? I'm talking about @Gargron, the creator of the site and the moderator of the Social instance? And no matter how many times anyone tells me to move I'm staying where I am. I agree with his approach to moderation even if some others do not.
Yeah, the creator of this site indeed has stated that many times over the years. Got in some disputes over this too.
But you know what, if you actually manage to change his mind I'll be very very grateful. See, Qoto (the server I'm on) actually has Quote-Toots available, almost since the beginning of the Fediverse. And Qoto gets a lot of shit for having it and even gets blocked by other servers for having this feature.
So if vanilla Mastodon actually will get QT, which I doubt but hey, there is even less reason to shitpile onto Qoto. So I'm not against that feature, far from it. But I just highly doubt it'll ever happen.
@trinsec @neilhimself I wasn't aware any instance supported #QuotePosts. But even if there are there are downsides to migrating between servers. Those who do that end up with accounts that look like everything they posted, Boosted, and all their followers and followees have vanished into thin air. That's a big incentive to stick with your existing instance. That's one reason I'm not shopping around for another that may have a few advantages. Expect Neil feels the same.
