@trinsec Yes, it's a wooden puzzle, with 1/4" plywood pieces in this case.
There's quite a renaissance in wooden puzzle making at the moment. Laser cutting has changed the economics significantly: the original method of cutting wood by jigsaw (hence the name) is very time-consuming.
@crosswordman Ah sweet, less of a chance of the damn cardboard breaking in the thin pieces. And yeah, laser cutting is pretty nifty.
@trinsec Yes, the unusual shapes are a traditional feature of wooden jigsaw puzzles, and are called whimsies.
I like to start with them, as the odd outlines of whimsy pieces make a helpful starting point.
