https://shop.waltherarms.com/q-series-rds-backup-sights-rmr-footprint Walther finally decided to do something about the lack of the rear sight on Q5. Ian McCollum published a video that explains why the iron sights remain critically important on handguns with optical sights more than 4 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3ogBYjTQqk #guns #銃

@gat mine comes with one. Or does that mean have the iron and the optical sight at the same time? I hope this one you're talking about is one of the choices for the free one

@su Take a look at the video that I linked, but skip all the context and start at offset 6 min 20 sec. That is where Ian explains what Walther did wrong initially.

@gat @su Interesting to see gun jesus' carry pistol

@valleyforge @gat

According to the comments at the time of this 4 year old video, he carried a Glock. Someone said that sounds like mario andretti driving a honda civic

@su That comment does sound stupid now, but it was posted before the U.S. market Civic Type R was introduced, so we can forgive it. Note that Ian actually explains on video why he was carrying G19 as a host of Suarez slide. In addition Ian's tastes are a little... different. I happen to know that he carried Remington Model 51 a few years before. You'd think an antique like that belonged in a museum.
@valleyforge
@gat

I think it'd be amusing if he carried some silly French thing but he's ultimately more practical than that

@su @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

Leyonhjelm, guess who's actively searching for a cz sp01, me! No luck yet. I did find one for $649 but it has the decocker so the search continues

@su

Yeah I had ordered mine in with the safety, they had the decocker one but my mind is ruined by my love of 1911 to the point where a normal safety is my thing.

@gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

I just wish things would go back to normal. I think the ammo and gun hoarding has gotten even worse. I've been on the text waiting list at a place where Ive gotten six boxes relatively quickly but now nothing for about 3 weeks

@su

My gun hoarding hasn't really gotten worse, I think I only bought six last year. Maybe five. Six? Maybe it was seven. I don't remember.

For casual observers who think that's high: I've mentioned before I collect pre-WWII Mausers, usually on a "I saw it and looked at it in the store and decided it was a good example for the collection" basis. The more I can go to the store, the more random Mausers make it home. Some years the average is one a month, and none of them are on the "ban this now" agendas even in states like Californistan. They know they're not going to ban old bolt-action rifles no matter how much they bluster.

@gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

True, they're historical, should be preserved and collected. I read about mauser, heckler and koch and walther. One bought the other's factory or something like that, after the war, I can't remember

@leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

Interesting to read the history. You must have quite a collection!

@ThreeOneThreeChris @leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

Oh hey! That's about what they're going for now, I don't think I even saw that this morning, thank you!

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I know, I just don't see being able to get one cheaper, do you think? Should I wait?

@su

Your options are pay what people are asking, you can wait, or you can order one in from somewhere if they can get it but probably still pay a premium. I ordered mine in at a local shop in 2018 or 2019 and they had it in a week. This year I don't know but you can always ask.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge
I didn't think of that, asking the shop if they can get one in...
In your opinion, if it has a decocker, is that a problem if it's not going to be carried?

@su

Even if you were carrying it wouldn't be a problem. I simply prefer a manual safety. Some people consider the decocker to be a better choice because it's ready and in double action mode for the first shot, and some prefer the safety because every shot is single action.

If it had been decocker-only it would not have been a dealbreaker for me.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I'd better spend the extra money and get the thumb safety. You have been a huge help.

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @su I definitely prefer the decocker but mostly because I'm used to it

@su @leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge I’d say get it, considering the uncertain climate with regard to 2A rights and the incoming administration. Plus the seller has an +A rating.
@ThreeOneThreeChris

My leaning is always buy it but that's not everyone's situation so I try not to project too much

@su @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge
I always put the brakes on and weigh things out forever before spending money. indesicive! No wonder I hate shopping.
Ok the deal's done! I'll imagine I'm a spy in Prague or something with this beauty. I'm so retarded and excited. We need some fun in this insane world and this is mine, yes it is.

@su

That's one of the things I like about my Mauser collecting strategy. I buy what I want to buy when I find it but am careful about what I select. Mostly. The one I'm building in 7.62 NATO from parts was for fun and for use, all I need is to be sure I can stay in one place long enough to send the receiver and barrel to a gunsmith to properly be headspaced and installed and I can do the rest.

I'm hoping to use it for hunting this year unless I decide to take something else.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I had a German rifle of my dad's but when I moved here from Canada but I had to leave it behind. I guess that would've been my only "safe queen".

Are these mausers you're collecting brought back from the war? I guess they would be

@su

Most of them are surplused. I have stuff from the Swedish military, the Turkish military, the Brazilian military, the WWI German military, the Imperial Japanese Navy (Czech-made), one that I'm not sure where it served, the Argentine military. Honestly I really like the Czech-made ones. Fantastic machining, right up there with Ludwig Lowe/DWM.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I'm glad that I was able to sing this czech's praises loudly, thanks to you, and will be welcoming it to the family instead of a turkish canik!

@su

Fun fact, my Turkish military rifle was made by Czechs in 1927 in Brno. Dobrá puška.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I watched a video of the sootch fella opening up crate after crate of chinese shotgun surplus, they were coated in some kind of thick grease.

What ones do you have from ww1 germany?

@su

As far as WWI my only "definitely from the war" one is a receiver for a Kar98az. I haven't decided what to do with it yet but I got it for a fair price and it's in excellent shape. 1915, Erfurt Arsenal.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge
@su

The action is like butter. Not economical to rebuild in its original spec unless I really just wanted a fantastic shooter from it. Which I have considered, and may eventually do. I was originally going to use it for my 7.62 project but decided not to risk it with its small ring. That's why I got the Brazilian 1908 receiver for that project.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge
Sounds like you're doctor frankenstein, building his monster!

Show newer

@ThreeOneThreeChris @leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

Yes for sure, I saw that bill they're already introducing. gas prices are going up already, too. I'm jumping on it, except I did just find one for 779 at hinterland sports!
This czech gun is pretty neat. Now I understand where the saying "running around half-cocked" comes from. my two are striker-fired. Such a noob but I'm getting there

@su

Exposure makes a difference in understanding. You have a wider knowledge of different firearms than most of the soldiers in history at this point, who learn just enough to operate what they're handed and march off to war.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I've heard we're in the golden age of firearms. It's a shame they're trying to stop us from fully enjoying it

@leyonhjelm @ThreeOneThreeChris @gat @valleyforge

I just don't understand their thinking. Like the bad guys buying guns out if a car trunk will care about any laws. Just makes it uneven for us regular people

@su @leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge These apprehensive political conditions, and reading your posts about looking for that CZ, have me catching a bit of the gun bug myself. I’m eyeballing a bunch of listings for factory-new Ruger Super Redhawks chambered in 10mm over on Gunbroker. Seriously thinking about buying one and then taking it over to Magnaport for some customizations.

@ThreeOneThreeChris @leyonhjelm @gat @valleyforge

Ill look that one up and see what it's all about!
I still want an American one. I want an American .22 and was looking at a Browning 1911. We have a gun show coming up but I work every weekend.
