From a report written by the Mexican general Manuel Mier y Terán about the state of the Texas territory in 1828, after the start of American immigration:
"...among these foreigners are fugitives from justice, honest laborers, vagabonds and criminals, but honorable and dishonorable alike travel with their political constitution in their pockets, demanding the privileges, authority and officers which such a constitution guarantees."
Apparently Americans have been yelling "I know my rights" for at least two hundred years. I can hardly be prouder.
