I'm nearing the end of redeveloping two courses for the spring semester. If you were teaching "Linux Programming" (with a focus on server management) and or "Network Security," what would you say "must be in the syllabus?"

These are community college students in the United States.

.Programming: even if late in my life, I am interested in learning C++, Python, Julia and maybe another high-level language for high performing scientific computing (suggestions are welcome).
-Botanics (I love flowers and trees, specially the art of naming their species in latin, i.e., taxonomy).
-Animal taxonomy (specillay felines like lynxes, wolves, ...).
-Technology. I am planning to "play with" raspberry PIs and/or Jenson nanos if my life simplifies (and make more money)...(If anyone knows how to build up simple cheap clusters of pis or nanos, let me know tutorials).
-I LOVE curious people and weirdos.
