Seeing some concerning posts about c.im like this one from @aral and I'm thinking I might need to find another home for @librarypass before getting too comfortable there?
Evaluating instances for personal use vs. a business presence is different, and c.im seemed to be a good fit, but policing conversations about racism is a huge red flag in both cases.
I love the friction that makes companies think twice about engaging on here, but I'm not sure what the ideal solution is, either.
Should every business host their own instance? Maybe trade organizations will step up and host instances for their members?
It took YEARS for Twitter to become a worthwhile minefield for companies to navigate, and most aren't going to abandon it anytime soon.
Hopefully the #Fediverse evolves to embody the ideals of #Cluetrain and they never find a place here. 🤷
It depends on the business, its products, its needs, and size.
One thing to keep in mind is that ActivityPub is so much more than just text tweets, so businesses can use it in all sorts of interesting ways.
For example, imagine a power company broadcasting machine readable stats on current energy usage. They'd likely want their own instance, probably a custom one, to streamline that automatically.
Meanwhile, the little lady down the road making custom handycrafts, yeah, she can probably use a hosted instance to post about her latest projects.
Yeah, I'm critical of Mastodon for how it seems to have mainly been designed as a replacement for Twitter with even more restrictions rather than a broader platform to empower users above and beyond what Twitter offered.
