My kid wants to get a Venus fly trap, and I'm torn. It's a plant that eats animals. I have no idea how to feel about this 😂
If it helps, they don't NEED to eat animals to survive, in case that's a point of contention between you two.
The kid could grow one as just a neat looking plant.
They are a little sensitive, though, so hopefully your kid wouldn't be too upset if it doesn't work out.

Anyway, yep, I personally like having the weird... errm... eyecatching plants around.

@jessicamauerhan @volkris just don't poke them to make them close, it takes energy and they need the food to recuperate. But mine has been alive for a couple years with not much to eat. I had one when I was a teen in my bedroom and it caught some giant spiders. At first I was like oh cool it caught spiders but then I was like oh shit there were giant spiders in my bedroom. So I'm glad that I had it. 😅
@maccath says those fly traps have been alive for years with not much to eat, and that sounds to me like a back door brag about having a clean house 🙂
@jessicamauerhan @volkris I've never fed them deliberately. I just let them do their thing. I don't generally even mind spiders in my house now. They catch flies. Just, lots of rainwater (swamplike conditions, mine is in a pot of water permanently) and sunlight for venus flytraps. They are finicky though, as stated. It'll go dormant, might seem like it died, but may come back so don't give up hope.

Like I said, some of them can be a little temperamental when it comes to getting just the right amount of light, and I think sometimes tap water might be bad for them, but bugs are sort of a special treat they don't really need to survive.
@volkris he's not vegan, just me - it's just weird, it's a weird plant! He likes them and they're native here, there's just something so weird about it.
