I don’t understand how microblogging works — why do people follow people? We like different things. I am more familiar with following topics.

Thinking of just following hashtags + a couple of friends instead and using relays for the federation footprint.

I need to learn how Usenet, newsgroups and UUCP/NNTP worked, and see if I can learn from the ancients. Lol.

I have similar questions, and I sort of get the impression that it is almost like a social credit system where I will follow you and an exchange you will follow me and the whole point is to mutually boost our follower counts because that number makes us feel good?

Yeah I really don't get microblogging.

@volkris Curious — how did you find my post? That would be informative.

@ignis

I was just randomly scrolling through the federated feed on my instance, the little world logo that shows all of the content that this instance sees from the broadcasts from all of the other instances It knows about.

@volkris Ah, that’s slightly disappointing — I thought you found it via a hashtag, which seems to be good for topic-based subscriptions especially for a server as well-federated as QOTO.

@ignis

Ha! Now that I glance over at my home feed (whatever they're called) I do see your post there since I believe I follow the hashtag of Mastodon.

You'll be glad to hear that!

@volkris Haha, I’m glad indeed! Thanks. Back to thinking…
