With full text #search, people wouldn't have to link to Tweets of posts that exist in the same or higher quality in the #fediverse. #mastodon

@andreclaassen The web is decentralized and there are several search engines that work quite well.

I like the idea (from Bluesky) of having multiple indexers and users can choose which one they want to use.

At the moment, it seems to be more of a cultural and not a technical issue.

But consider: those search engines themselves tend to be centralized :)

There are real questions about scalability on the storage and processing side for full text search of a distributed system.

This is not a simple or easy problem to solve.

@andreclaassen

@volkris @andreclaassen Yes, the search engines are and will be centralized. I prefer centralized search engines over no search engines.

Yes, as the fediverse grows there will be scaling issues. But we aren't there yet.

Twitter had different indexes. One for the last few days to make complex queries work and a different one for older content.

To prevent having to rely on ads, one could implement a free index for current posts and a paid one for older ones.

@luca @volkris most important statement: I prefer centralized search engines over no search engines.
