I read the short story, "#SpaceTraders", by #DerrickBell thanks to a rec in a thread.
It's well-told and thought provoking; the last line, devastating.
I do wish it had portrayed a United States in an economic situation closer to the 1950's than to the dystopic state of the story so readers today could get caught in their own hypocrisy.
We've always been sacrificed; most of the 85% abide our oppression for their comfort.
"They're evil and selfish"
And you're doing what, exactly?
I think so much comes down to us not holding the right people accountable.
We keep reelecting the exact politicians who do exactly the things we say we don't want.
I have so many friends who will actively campaign for the reelection of a politician who voted against the things they say are most important to them.
Often enough those friends simply don't know the voting records of the people they're promoting.
And so today we'll see a lot of legislators pointing fingers at the courts for acting on the laws that the legislators themselves could have been fixing.
It's no wonder we're in this situation.
@volkris Collectively, we have the government we deserve.
Our jerry-rigged system is dependent on an independent, fact-based media helping to create and maintain a well-informed and involved electorate, without which we get the kind of situation you've described.
Generally we are ill-informed and uninvolved, and often barely an electorate.
The now-oligarchs captured and poisoned the media long ago, and the public allowed that to happen, and to persist.
I don't have answers.
