#technojargon
Stop saying that the fediverse is built up of instances. That is not how it feels like. It doesnt reflect the experience. And this form of technojargon alienates people and make them feel its more complicated than it is.

Instead it is built up of societies. These societies are by default associating with other societies, but can choose to shun if it is deemed necessary.
@vegafjord except that there are enough technical issues or wrinkles you run into that at some point you have to start thinking about instances in someway or another. It’d be good if the UX were more seamless, but IME it isn’t.
@vegafjord I had the same reactoin that @maegul did.
Maybe we should aspire to a day when #Fediverse and #Mastodon interfaces were that intuitive and technical issues weren't so intrusive, but that's not where we are today.
Everything from cross-instance addressing through security through "why am I not seeing all the comments?" intrude into user experiences, putting instances pretty front and center at this point.
Societies shunning each other is (hopefully) not nearly as apparently in day to day usage as this other stuff.
@volkris I really dont understand what the issue is.
We can call places like mastodon.social, freeradical.zone and fribygda.no societies. The users are members of the societes and they can express themselves. Local or external members can respond to the expression.
There is no reason to throw a good analogy even if software has bugs.
