Looks like the threads.net web UI has gone "live."

I still prefer #elk.zone + #mastodon.

@steve Hurh. Interestingly, while #threads is run by #meta, Threads is not blocking Canadian news media links for #Canadians #billC18 the way #Facebook is.

@tezoatlipoca I wonder if Threads not (yet) blocking news for Canadians is strategic in order to gain (keep) users? Or Threads just isn't a mature enough product to allow them to easily apply the kind of filters Insta and FB have? Hard for them to argue it's a distinct product with a small enough market share that #BillC18 doesn't apply.

@schultzter @tezoatlipoca I think the hardest argument for them is why they're the ONLY instance on a decentralized network that has restrictions on Canadian news content. They would have to explain why every other member of this multi-faceted social media platform remains unaffected yet they're trying to blame the Canadian government for "forcing their hand". They are the only bullies, and restricting Meta would only make that even more blatantly obvious than it already is.

Seems like it's a pretty big difference that their instance is owned by such a giant corporation, unlike so many other instances.

@schultzter @tezoatlipoca

@volkris @schultzter @tezoatlipoca Is the difference the size of the corporation, or the way they operate? It's not their incorporation, but their for-profit mandate.

@ned

I haven't looked into this before, but this might be the list of qualifications that matter, things like size of the operator and whether the operator occupies a prominent market position.
