Whats that you say, favoriting a post is functionally useless because there's no algorithm on Mastodon?

Tell that to my instant gratification addicted lizard brain that's getting hit with a tidal wave of dopamine every time my phone vibrates.

@lowqualityfacts Favouriting a public post makes it appear higher on the explore page, same as a boost, as long as the author is opted-in...

Folks don't like to admit it, but even "show the most recent post first" is an algorithm.

Yes, has algorithms.
The question is whether we want choices of better ones or not.

@Gargron @lowqualityfacts

@volkris @Gargron @lowqualityfacts i have a dream of an open standard for content sorting. some kind of limited structured query language for content on timelines. maybe we could even subscribe to our favorite "Hot" and "For You" algorithms and actually be able to see what they're doing with some transparency.

@wagesj45

I think the key is for different interfaces to offer users choices to pick what algorithm they want. I'm all about empowering users to get the experience they want.

It doesn't even have to be standardized. Mastodon could offer one set of options while another platform offers a different set.

@Gargron @lowqualityfacts

@volkris @wagesj45 @Gargron @lowqualityfacts Algorithm is such an overused and under-understood word. As you mentioned - most people don’t get - any method of sorting uses an algorithm. :)
