@marqle well BlueSky is just a fundamentally different platform that doesn't use the same model as ActivityPub with its focus on instances above all, so it's really apples and oranges.
It's like saying this electric car isn't going to run on gasoline. They're just fundamentally different.
It might be that the BlueSky system is better. We will see once it is more finalized.
@volkris @marqle And that’s the REAL question that I have with BlueSky under the hood - they’re still building it. So a lot of the “how’s this gonna work” is still “¯\_(ツ)_/¯”
Some clever stuff in there (feeds are kinda slick) but my two things that I REALLY wanna see are:
3rd party (GreySky is a decent try but nothing as nice almost any of the 3rd party iOS Masto apps)
linking directly to posts, I assume will happen once they drop the “invite only”
@volkris @marqle Yeah, my personal opinion there is that they are aware that dropping the “invite only” thing is hugely dangerous for them, because the rep that BS has is “its so nice here” is (again IMO) almost solely because of that “wall”.
It’s probably my biggest concern about BlueSky itself; they’ve bobbled a number of scandals already that’s with the invite system in place.
They’re gonna have to be really ready for the influx of the assholes.
Well I'm not disagreeing with you, but there is the dimension of the story that they are claiming to be decentralized to some level, and a fundamental part of decentralization is that things like moderation and reporting are also decentralized, so technically that shouldn't be a problem for them.
However, to your point, it might remain a PR issue for them that they might not know how to deal with, as none of us know how to deal with it. Even this platform doesn't really know how to do with it.
To put it a different way, technically, they are probably pretty prepared for the moderation issues because technically there's not that much of an issue in a decentralized system.
But PR wise, yeah I can imagine them having some real behind the scenes trouble dealing with the question.
@volkris @marqle Oh, I definitely don’t know what the issue is from their end. I’m just saying that I don’t think they are prepared for the flood of reporting, abuse, violations, trust and safety issues, etc.
And I will say if I was in their position, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to drop the drawbridge down for everyone to cross unless I was sure I was ready for it.
