So yes, I'm testing #PixelFed.

Follow me there: @DavidBHimself

So far what I like about it: Well, it's the #Fediverse. So, I can post pictures there and then share them to all my accounts (don't worry The Crow updates are staying here)

What I'm not totally sold on: it lacks the spontaneity of Instagram when posting. Also a few weeks ago, I saw pics of the UI and it was stunning. It seems that it has changed, and well... I liked the old UI better (I'm talking about the front end)

So is the spontaneity issue just a matter of making the UI easier to post from? Or is there something deeper in the way?

@volkris
I'm not too sure yet. I just feel that I need to do many more actions.
Entering ALT texts may be part of the problem. Especially because what I upload is often very visual. For e.g. pictures of the sea: I often take the "same" picture, but what matters with them is the light, the colors, etc. It's not how many islands or boats are in the pictures.
I see the point of ALT here on Mastodon, but honestly, do many visually impaired people use something like PixelFed?

@volkris Since I arrived on the Fediverse, I'm been trying to do my best with #alttext but more often than not, I don't really know what to do with them. What is useful, what is not? No clue. 🤷

@David I'm of the opinion that we should let people do their art the way they want to do their art, so okay fine we can point out that alt text is important for the vision impaired, but if the artist feels that it's not right for their expression, I absolutely don't think we should hold that against them.

Or one way to put it is that if we all have to choose between you posting without alt text or you feeling kind of suffocated by that ask, I'd rather you post without alt text.

The way I look at it this is supposed to be about expression and any requirements that interfere with that expression, however the author/artist feels right, is something we ought to not impose.
