Patriarchy despises sex work and sex workers for the same reason it despises abortion and trans rights.
Because like all forms of personal autonomy, it removes the locus of social control over sex, sexuality, etc. from cis-het men and gives people agency over their own lives.
The puritanical nonsense about sex work is largely a distraction from cis-het men's rage over not being able to own and commoditize women's sexuality (and others) for themselves.
@gwynnion meh, Occam's Razor would have us at least consider explanations that are more straightforward than that.
The puritanical nonsense about sex work might simply be reflective of an attitude that values old-fashioned notions of family, sentimental images that don't particularly involve ownership or commoditization.
It's a reach to go there.
