While I was in the shower today, I thought of a potential amendment to the U.S. constitution, it would have to be that, to add further qualifications to being able to run for the presidency.
A candidate for the position of president, in addition to the existing age and citizenship requirements, must have previously held political or military office, or else be endorsed by a recently acting president.
Political office may be state or federal, either directly in a position with constituents or else working alongside them. This includes but is not limited to members of federal and state legislatures I.E. congresspeople, members of state and federal executive, such as previous president and vice president, state governors, and cabinet members thereof, members of the judiciary, such as judges and licensed law professionals, and members of lower, municipal and county governments, such as mayors and county sheriffs.
Military office is obvious enough, holders of military rank or in positions of authority at the pentagon. Generals would be the most common from this camp.
This I would only apply to the president, the vice president is free to be chosen by the president and the nominating committee, and of course being VP means you can run for president in the future.
The idea here is to prevent future anomalies such as Donald Trump from coming clear out of nowhere and grabbing the presidency, with zero experience in public roles before this.
Unless I'm missing some facts, excluding Trump all previous U.S. presidents fall into these categories, usually senators, governors, or war heros with ranks like General. Many candidates do as well, Hillary was secretary of State, Biden was Obama's VP etc. Unsure about RFK, could something be said for close family of holders of political office? That might be necessary to include Bush.
Obviously this law wouldn't prevent Trump himself from running even if it were in force today, as he was president once, so of course he has the right to run again.
Would this be reasonable? Reply with your thoughts or any corrections on the history that I might have accidentally disqualified other existing presidents, and if so which ones and how they were thought of. Is the endorsement thing necessary to do that? Or the family stipulation? Should this be applied to VP as well, and if so would it break the history?
