Having a second massively centralized copy of the big index, that costs tens of millions of dollars to run, is not decentralization.

It can't be decentralized because it costs millions of dollars to run a node.
No one will explain to me what is wrong with improving the UI, web-wide integration and support for the fedi instead where we already have a rather large talented, interesting (and good looking!) group of users being very social 24/7 ... what does this do that we don't already have? The only thing I can think of are "big names" and that can matter. But, why not just improve the big project everyone is already doing?

For $30m you could easily fork #mastodon (or another of the great projects out there) and fix all the things those who prefer #bluesky to here complain about. and we'd all love to have another large and healthy alternative using #ActivityPub as part of the fedi. that's the whole point. I mean we've probably had less than $1m spent on the network so far.
if @pluralistic wasn't part of this effort, I'd assume #FreeOurFeeds wasn't at all what it claimed to be.
