The Framers took care to leave the running of elections in state hands because they feared a strongman figure would try to seize national power over it. Trump must not be allowed to rule by decree, and most especially not here. It’s dangerous, wrong, and unconstitutional.

Don't waste time on which parts of his elections order might be good, bad or a mixed bag were they enacted by a legitimate authority such as a state legislature or Congress (as the case may be). Trump is trying to usurp power not rightfully his. That's the key point and that's where to focus. /2

I've been asked a lot lately whether Republicans in Congress had the votes to pass the so-called SAVE Act, and responded that at present they couldn't get it past a Senate filibuster. I never imagined Trump would just bypass votes in Congress and try to impose major portions of it by decree. /4
