Another sign that the #US is moving away from the #JudicialSystem & toward a #totalitarian embrace of #ExecutivePower

A #jury voted for Jeffery Lee to receive a life sentence. The #State of #Alabama plans to execute him anyway

The concept of #JudicialOverride exposes a “disconnect” between today’s laws & the standards for how people were sentenced to death in the past, said Robin Maher, exec direc of the #DeathPenalty Information Center.

Lee is one of 27 people in Alabama who still face the death penalty due to judicial override, said MiAngel Cody, one of Lee’s lawyers.

In their clemency petition, Lee’s defense team asked Ivey “to finish the work she started,” and dismantle #JudicialOverride retroactively, Cody said. A bill now making its way through the #Alabama legislature also seeks to resentence defendants in capital murder cases who were sentenced to death through judicial override.

Thank goodness.

#SCOTUS Blocks #Alabama From Executing Inmate Using #NitrogenGas

The unsigned decision for now spares Jeffery Lee, a convicted murderer, & could lead to a broader fight over the relatively new execution method.

@Nonilex The US is one of the few democratic countries that have not abolished the death penalty. They need to do that.

@grumpydad

Well, look at it the other way: as a democratic country the US should maintain the death penalty if that's what the people want.

Often folks look at some issue they see as a problem and overlook that the people actually want it that way.
