This is depressing but not surprising. There needs to be a sea-change for Linux to be practical on a phone WITHOUT relying on Android, but it's a vicious circle. All the important apps you need on your phone only come in two flavors because there's no Linux market. There's no Linux market because (among other reasons), the apps everyone needs aren't there. It's not so much about the cycle between developers and Linux as about hardware vs software developers.
