@kragen @akkartik @davidk01 Chuck Moore is an advocate of throwing away general purpose computers in exchange for lots of task-optimized computers. I am not. While I think task-optimized computing is a good thing to have around, current IoT trends suggests that there's still a huge need for general purpose computers; as well, current legal and commercial pressures continues to illustrate how task-optimization can be taken in the wrong direction entirely. General purpose computing is a duty.

is a myth. Period. It's a lie popularized by capitalists who don't want to have to change their ways.
The problem is not that we have too many people; we as a species produce enough food in a year to feed the entire population several times over. The problem is that corporations would rather throw food away than give it to someone who hasn't paid for it. Food waste (corporate, not personal) is an enormous problem, and "overpopulation" is the myth they use to deflect from it.
