Having done OU courses, you get several course books, so I guess main book is like the lectures, but once you have gone through a section, you have extra reading or watching videos / listening to audio to do, this adds to the basic information presented in the main course book.
Perhaps Universities need to make it clear that university is about lectures and study or schools need to prepare people better for univeristy / life out side school.
Even better if you are going to university do some research as to what is expected of you as a student.
