If Understand American English correctly, then a loony is a 1 cent piece.
If you say loony bin in the UK, I think it used to mean psychiatric ward.

Loony bin is the same in UK and American Englishes. Loonie is the nickname for the Canadian dollar coin since 1987, featuring a loon. "Loony bin" for "tip jar" (and I should have used the coin's spelling) is a dad joke-level pun I dressed up a little.
