Dumb software development question Show more
Say there's a free software programming you use all the time and want to improve in some way. What's the best way to enable this without wrecking the version that you have installed and use every day?

Maybe use a virtual machine, or is there a command called chroot which sort of sets up a container thing to isolate from the system.
