🧵 1/4 Thoughts on the UK 2024 general election

Of course I hope that Labour wins, and that the Tories lose badly, but I am also hoping to see this brought about by some tactical voting that will bring in some Green MPS and Lib Dems where Labour has no chance.

Aside from those purely tactical considerations , it would be good to have Greens in parliament speaking out from the left of Labour on certain issues and the Lib Dems breaking the silence on the EU.

🧵 4/4 Thoughts on the UK 2024 general election

Even though I am happy to see Reform take enough votes away from the Tories to let Labour, Green, or Lib Dem candidates win, I am praying that they fail to win any seat in the Commons. I don't want them given any more opportunities to spout their poisonous rhetoric.

I am particularly hoping to see Farage lose in Clacton. If he does, then maybe the BBC will at last recognise that there is no reason whatsoever to give this man a platform week after week.

If Labour come first, Reform come second (and sit opposite) and the Tories are given a small miniority in the Commons, it may be the best thing that could happen in decades. I feel it will be a MASSIVE wake up call to the political elite as to what could happen at the next general election of labour mess up and don't deliver.

But I do actually agree with you, about their rhetoric.

We have the far right gaining ground across europe and other countries, we need to be very careful

@zleap @jemmesedi
That would be terrible, what are you thinking? That would mean a significant fraction of the English electorate had embraced far-right xenophobic populism, and Reform would be able to sit there stoking hate and offering stupid, dramatic soundbites in answer to all the complex problems left by the Tories while Labour inevitably disappoint the electorate for 5 years by not changing anything. Then fascism. That's how it happens. Fuck that.

A progressive opposition, please.

@petealexharris @jemmesedi

If reform DO sit opposite, at least the PM won't be able to say in response to a question 'lets look at the record of the party opposite' and will actually need to answer the question.

@zleap @jemmesedi
That would be equally true if the Lib Dems sit opposite, and their questions would not be aimed at marching the centre of public discourse towards Auschwitz.

I think maybe you don't understand why you do not invite fascists to debate.

@petealexharris @jemmesedi

I am sure there is little harm in discussing different scenarios, Going by what is said here about the GOP in the US and the rise of the far right in Europe, we are simply failing to get a grip on so much, esp with social media platforms side stepping their responsibility and allowing content to be shared.

I have done prevent awareness training courses and the far right pose far greater threat than Islamic terrorism or extremism.

Reform will gain ground as they are hitting the headlines more. Hardly much coverage given to the Lib dems unless the leader is involved in some publicity.

@zleap @jemmesedi

They may or may not win some seats. If you're saying it's possible the far right will continue to gain power here, as in the US and in Europe, then yes, it does seem possible. But it's something to work against, not resign ourselves to. Politics is not like the tides.

But I was originally responding to your statement "it may be the best thing that could happen in decades" which, well, to be fair to you perhaps it was off the cuff and doesn't reflect your considered opinion

Yes my point in saying
"it may be the best thing that could happen in decades" was in relation to my other statement of it being a wake up call.
